A Journey of Strategy and Team Building
Setting the Stage: Strategic Planning for 2025
At the end of October, the Granby Leadership Team embarked on an exciting Away Day, a journey of strategy and team building marking a pivotal moment for planning and team cohesion.
The day began with a focused planning session involving the Leadership Team of Caroline Noblett – Managing Director, Andrew Gregson – Operations Director, Dave Saunders – Head of Warehousing and Site Services, Victoria Pittman – Head of Client Services / Business Development and Paul Dunleavy – Head of IT.
Purpose
The purpose of the day was to chart the course for 2025. The atmosphere was charged with camaraderie, as the team delved into discussions on the rolling five-year plan, assessing progress and identifying necessary changes to stay on track. This session underscored the importance of collaboration, communication, and trust-building, core elements that define Granby’s ethos.
The Crystal Maze Experience: A Metaphor for Team Dynamics?
Following the strategic planning session, the team transitioned to the ‘Crystal Maze Experience’ in Manchester, a unique team-building exercise built almost exactly on the much-loved TV game show. And one that mirrored many of the challenges faced in the business world. Caroline Noblett took on the role of team captain, with Andrew Gregson as co-captain, leading the team through a series of mental and physical challenges across four distinct zones: Industrial, Futuristic, Medieval, and Aztec. The experience highlighted the necessity of teamwork, strategic thinking, and effective communication, as each member relied on their colleagues for support and guidance.
Bridging Silos: Learning from Each Other
One of the key objectives of the Away Day was to bridge potential silos within the leadership team. With strong leaders capable of independently managing their teams, the event provided an opportunity for deep discussions and shared learning. The Crystal Maze challenges, with their time pressures and need for quick decision-making, served as a microcosm of the real-world challenges faced in the logistics and warehousing sectors. The team recognised the value of these exercises in fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
Trust and Open Communication: The Cornerstones of Success
Trust emerged as a central theme throughout the day, reinforcing its role as the foundation of any successful team.
Victoria noted, “It’s humbling and a real privilege to work alongside such dedicated colleagues. Our collective vision and aligned objectives make every challenge an opportunity.”
The day’s activities reinforced the importance of maintaining strong relationships, both internally and with clients and partners.
Aligning with Granby’s Core Pillars
The Away Day also served as a reminder of Granby’s commitment to its three key pillars. These are, getting things right the first time, putting people before profit, and ensuring sustainability throughout the business. The leadership team’s focus on these principles was evident in their approach to the challenges and discussions of the day. By aligning strategic goals with these core values, the team reaffirmed their dedication to driving growth while maintaining a strategic fit with the business’s overarching mission.
A Lasting Impact: Bringing Learnings Back to Blackburn

As the day concluded, the Granby Leadership Team reflected on the insights gained and the strengthened bonds formed. The experience at the Crystal Maze was not just about fun and games. It was a valuable exercise in trust-building and strategic thinking.
Caroline Noblett reflected on the experience, stating,
“Seeing us engage in meaningful conversations, where ideas were freely shared and feedback was constructive, was truly gratifying. This open communication is essential for trust and is a cornerstone of our employee-owned philosophy.”
The team returned to Granby HQ in Blackburn with a renewed sense of purpose. And a commitment to applying the day’s learnings in their daily operations.
A Day of Growth and Reflection
As ever, the Granby Leadership Away Day was a resounding success,. This time round providing a platform for strategic planning, team building, and personal growth. The combination of structured planning sessions and dynamic team exercises created an environment where ideas flourished, and relationships were strengthened. As the team looks to the future, they carry with them the lessons learned. And with the bonds freshly forged, ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. With a focus on collaboration, communication, and trust, the Granby Leadership Team is well-equipped to lead the company into a successful and sustainable future.
