Unexpected Crossovers – University Studies to Professional Passions

At Granby, we occasionally find that our university studies, and our personal passions can intersect with our professional lives in the most unexpected ways. Certainly, some of the football fans amongst us have been fortunate enough to have been hosted for business meetings at Turf Moor and Ewood Park. But now and again the crossover is a complete surprise. This was beautifully illustrated during Niamh Powton’s visit to our client, the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), last week in Taunton, Somerset.

Niamh, a Client Partner at Granby, was delighted to be offered a curated tour of the UKHO Archives, which holds over 400 years of maritime history. As one of the most comprehensive maritime collections worldwide, the UKHO Archive has preserved centuries of navigational and hydrographic records since its establishment in 1795. Among the treasures she explored were the Admiralty’s original charts dating back to the 1800s!

Ancient History and Archaeology

Niamh has a background in Ancient History and Archaeology from the University of Manchester. Her passion for history found a perfect match in the UKHO Archives. She even brought back a tremendous memento from the day. This was a print of the first printed hydrographic chart of the South Coast of England. The chart was reproduced from an atlas held at Taunton on loan from the Admiralty Library.

This experience highlights how our personal skills and passions can, on occasion, intersect in unexpected ways. Allowing us unique moments of professional and personal fulfillment.

Chance, circumstance, and opportunity

It’s a reminder that while experience is crucial, many of us find our careers through a mix of chance, circumstance, and opportunity. Just because someone excels in a client-facing role doesn’t mean they can’t be passionate about a completely different topic. In Niamh’s case, the Venn diagram of her personal skills and passions intersected perfectly at the UKHO Archives in Taunton.

Niamh had this to say…

“Visiting the UKHO Archives was a remarkable experience that beautifully bridged my professional role and personal passion for history. Exploring centuries-old maritime charts and bringing back a print made an already rewarding client meeting, extra special. It’s incredible how our careers can align with our interests in the most unexpected ways.”

You can arrange a visit to the UKHO Archive

For those interested in exploring this incredible archive, visits are open to the public, subject to security clearance. To arrange a visit, complete an archive visit request form well in advance. Around 2 weeks for UK nationals, of your proposed visit. Please ensure the UKHO has confirmed your visit date and security clearances before making any travel plans. Additionally, students can access the online catalogue to search documents from the comfort of their own homes. Further information can be found here.
