Sunflowers for Earth Day
Earth Day
This week we recognise Earth Day and a global focus on Planet vs. Plastics. We recognised this by holding a “Sunflowers for Earth Day”. At Granby we understand how our packing and logistics operations might have a negative impact on the environment. We also appreciate that we have the power to use our experience, knowledge and partnerships to influence positive change and innovation in our sector, across the supply chain, and for our clients.
Granby’s Earth Day Sunflower Seeds initiative
Even at a micro level we recognise each of us can do our bit. Which is why we have our ‘Sunflowers for Earth Day’ Sunflower Seeds initiative. This year, to celebrate Earth Day, all employees at Granby are being given a pack of sunflower seeds. There’ll be a friendly competition over the summer to monitor growth! And for each of us, a daily reminder when we look at our blooms, of how precious our planet is.
Planet vs Plastics – embracing the Earth Day theme
This year’s Earth Day is themed around Planet vs Plastics. In 2022, we banished single use plastics by investing in new equipment and processes and we are now proud to say we source 86.5% (2022 – 23.25%) of our packaging from sustainable sources.
Granby’s Carbon Footprint Report 2023
For the past three years, our NetZero working group has been researching, planning and driving carbon reduction in our business. You can read all about these successes in our latest report.
Net Zero Commitment
In 2020, we made a commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. To fulfil this commitment, we aimed to reduce output emissions by 40% by 2025. Just 3 years in, we’re more than halfway to our initial goal. This equates to a CO2 reduction of 25.6% from our 2020 benchmark.
We now source 86.5% (2022 – 23.25%) of our packaging from sustainable sources. We upcycled a further 16% through donation or business utilisation, with only a very small amount going to landfill.
Our carrier partners are getting closer to being able to produce meaningful scope 3 statistics. Some have reported replacing their fleet as they retire vehicles with trucks that run on hydro treated vegetable oil. We hope to be able to start supplying metrics on this soon.
Employee-owned business
We’re an employee-owned business – Social Value, Net Zero, corporate social responsibility and sustainability are baked into our approach.
