Nic Rogan: A Pillar of Granby’s Success – Nic Rogan’s journey at Granby has been one of hard work, unwavering dedication, innovative spirit, and compassionate nature. Since joining the company in February 2011 as a Data Inputter, Nic has climbed the ranks to become an indispensable part of the HR team. Her contributions have profoundly impacted our organisation and its people, making her a key figure in fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture as we have transitioned to an Employee-owned Trust.
Early Career and Transition to HR
Nic began her career at Granby in a data-centric role, but her potential was quickly recognised. By 2013, she was supporting HR with fixed-term recruitment and administrative tasks while continuing her duties as an administrator. Her transition to the planning team in 2014 marked the beginning of her close collaboration with HR, a relationship that would define her career trajectory. In 2017, Nic moved into HR full-time, and by 2018, she had become the HR/Payroll Administrator, solidifying her role within the department.
Fostering a Positive Workplace Culture
Nic’s commitment to creating an engaging and inclusive workplace is evident in her efforts to organise memorable events for the staff. She often spends her evenings sourcing prizes, preparing rewards, and creating support materials to ensure each event is enjoyable. Her creativity and enthusiasm have made Granby a vibrant and exciting place to work, contributing significantly to employee morale and engagement.
Empathy and Support
One of Nic’s most remarkable qualities is her ability to make every employee feel valued and supported. Nic treats everyone with respect and equality, constantly checking in on her colleagues and offering a listening ear. Her approachable and empathetic nature has created a safe space for employees to share their concerns, knowing they will be met with understanding and care. Nic’s support extends beyond the workplace, as she often provides personalised assistance.

In addition to her role as a supportive mentor, Nic has been instrumental in organising activities that bring the Granby team together. She has been a pillar of strength for employees facing medical issues, maternity leave, and other personal difficulties. Her consistent check-ins, empathy, and practical assistance have alleviated stress and provided much-needed comfort. Whether it’s helping with forms, arranging childcare, or offering guidance on navigating complex situations, Nic’s dedication to her colleagues’ well-being is unparalleled.
HR Management and Strategic Support
Nic manages HR for our 82 employees and maintains robust relationships with everyone on the staff bank, ensuring workforce flexibility and reliability. This is crucial for meeting client demands and maintaining high service standards. Nic personally liaises with planning and operations teams to ensure the required employee numbers are met to successfully deliver client projects, even at short notice. Her ability to build and maintain these relationships ensures that Granby always delivers. We have also been fortunate enough to be nominated for, and to win a number of awards, Nic’s contribution to these should be acknowledged.
Onboarding and Training
As the first face of Granby, Nic is responsible for initial contact with candidates and new staff members. This means arranging interviews, completing inductions, and following through successful probation periods. In 2023 alone, she managed the onboarding of 15 new permanent starters and 421 fixed-term starters. Her meticulous organisation of training programs and engagement events has seen 72 people attend some form of training this year. This represents 89% of the team. By gathering feedback and continuously refining these initiatives, Nic ensures a virtuous circle that benefits both employees and the organisation.
Communication and Employee Engagement
Nic’s innovative engagement activities foster a sense of community and belonging. She manages team communication across the site through digital boards and monthly newsletters, ensuring that important information is shared effectively. As the chair of the Employee Forum and leader of weekly people-focused meetings, Nic ensures that employee voices are heard. And that the directors are promptly informed of any issues. This proactive communication allows for swift and fair resolutions, contributing to a positive and consistent workplace.
Payroll and Legal Compliance
In addition to her HR responsibilities, Nic handles payroll, ensuring timely and accurate compensation, which is fundamental to employee satisfaction. Nic shows real dedication to health and well-being. This, along with continuous self-development to stay abreast of legal and HR trends, underscores her commitment to Granby’s success. Nic’s caring nature and supportive approach contribute to the company’s low absenteeism and employee attrition rates. These are both critical indicators of a thriving organisation.
Strategic Alignment and Employee Ownership
Nic plays a pivotal role in supporting the strategic aims of Granby and building on its success. Her direct reporting line to the Managing Director ensures she remains aligned with the company’s strategic direction. This is built on the core value of “People over Profit.” Nic’s advocacy for the business as an Employee Ownership Trust fosters a culture where employees feel valued. And they feel invested in the company’s success, contributing to its long-term sustainability and community values.
