Meet Our New Apprentice
Meet Our New Apprentice, Katy Adams
Granby is delighted to welcome Katy Adams to our team as our new Accounts Apprentice. Katy brings a truly unique blend of personal experience and adaptability to our team, having navigated a non-traditional educational path to arrive at this exciting point in her career.
Katy’s Journey
Katy’s journey to Granby is as inspiring as it is unconventional. Growing up in Morecambe, Katy did not attend high school because of her traveller background. Instead, she embarked on her educational journey at Lancaster and Morecambe College, initially pursuing hairdressing. Her natural aptitude, quick progress and commitment in this field caught the attention of her tutors, who encouraged her to explore more academic pursuits. This pivotal moment led Katy to consider her options, ultimately steering her towards a career in accounting.
Hairdressing to Accountancy in one leap
Katy wasn’t feeling the love for hairdressing, and always felt the pull of the corporate world. Transitioning from hairdressing to accounting is indeed a significant leap, but Katy embraced the challenge with determination and enthusiasm. Her story is a real testament to her willingness to step out of her comfort zone and pursue a path that aligns with her evolving interests and skills. And, Katy says she is fortunate to have so much support from her parents and family for this career choice.
Katy at Granby
Katy is now in the very early stages of her apprenticeship, where she is eager to apply her growing knowledge of accounting principles to real-world scenarios. Her responsibilities include assisting with financial record-keeping, managing the finance inbox, posting invoices, and raising purchase orders. Basically supporting the accounts team wherever help is needed, as well as learning the intricacies of financial management within a business setting.
Despite being new to the office environment, Katy has found the transition smooth, thanks to the warm and welcoming atmosphere at Granby. She really appreciates the supportive and professional environment, which she finds conducive to both personal and professional growth. Katy is particularly excited about the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues and contribute to the team’s success.
Ambitions
Looking ahead, Katy is focused on building a solid foundation in accounting. She has aspirations to further her qualifications and expertise in the field. Having recently passed her AAT Level 2 the next step at Blackburn College in January is to take on her AAT Level 3 qualifications. She is driven by a desire to excel in her role and make meaningful contributions to Granby’s financial operations.
Away from work?
Katy admits that her life currently revolves around work and revision, but she has been making an effort to go out more in recent weeks. Katy enjoys reading and playing games with friends – even Call of Duty!
Lancashire Skills Pledge
In September 2023, we proudly signed up for the Lancashire Skills Pledge. This is a significant initiative aimed at addressing the skills gap in the region. The main goal of the Lancashire Skills Pledge is to ensure that individuals possess the necessary skills and qualifications to meet the demands of the local job market. It emphasises providing training and development opportunities for both young people and adults, particularly in key sectors such as logistics.
Through the Lancashire Skills Pledge, employers are encouraged to invest in the skills of their workforce by offering apprenticeships, work placements, and training programs. This not only enhances the employability of individuals but also helps businesses develop a skilled and productive workforce. We are actively working towards two more pledges: becoming an apprenticeship ambassador and recruiting Lancashire people.
Our Apprentice program
Over the past 18 months, we have welcomed other apprentices. Declan Talbot joined in 2023 and is now a full-time member of the GranbyClient Services Team.

More recently, Jack Hurst joined us as an apprentice, stepping into Declan’s role to learn the ropes in Client Services, support data collection and analysis, and contribute to our MI processes, as well as greet visitors at reception.

By investing in the development of talented individuals like Declan, Jack and Katy, Granby look to enhance our team’s capabilities. And we also look to continue to foster a culture of continuous learning and growth. Our Granby Academy plays a crucial role in this. The Academy offers employees opportunities for personal and professional development. This includes apprenticeships through professional body qualifications.
Welcome to the team, Katy! We are excited to support your journey and watch you thrive as a valuable member of our Granby family.
