Granby celebrate youth and our community
National Apprenticeships Week
Granby celebrate youth and our community: Earlier this month saw us celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, and we saw this as an opportunity to ask one of our own apprentices, Declan Talbot, what life is like for an apprentice at Granby.
National Apprenticeship Week is an opportunity for the education and skills sector to celebrate the achievements of apprentices around the country and the positive impact they make to communities, businesses, and the wider economy.
We let Declan tell us, in his own words, how the apprenticeship is working for him.
So, who is Declan?
“I’m 17 years old and I recently passed my driving test, I enjoy playing golf, watching football and I have also started playing darts. I enjoy seeing my friends at the weekend.”
What apprenticeship are you doing?
“Business Administration Level 3 through Blackburn College.”
Is there somethin enjoy most about your apprenticeship/Granby?
“My apprenticeship is 4 days per week in Granby and one day every week I attend Blackburn College, which is a good balance. I really enjoy ‘learning on the job’ and being in the business environment rather than just sitting in a classroom every day. All the team is supportive, and I like the people I work with. As I’m usually the first person visitors to the business meet when they come into Granby I get to meet lots of different people in my role.”
What do you see yourself doing after your apprenticeship?
“I’m not certain but I am very interested in the roles within the client services team – like the relationship managers.”
Where do you see yourself in the future?
“When the time is right, I would like to own my own business and I’m enjoying learning some of the skills I will need along the way.”
In recent weeks Declan has been working more closely with our social media and marketing team.In this role, he’s been getting hands on experience with LinkedIn and our monthly news updates. He has taken to this with the enthusiasm we have come to expect from him.
As for the future, we are sure he’ll make an incredible success of his career. For now, he’s looking to help other young job seekers in our local area by getting hands on at the Blackburn with Darwen ‘Jobs and Skills’ fair.

Declan, and Nicola talked with a great many young people about a career in the third party logistics sector.
Nic is a key member of the Granby HR team, while Declan is an apprentice focusing on Client Services. Both were there early to set up their stand at King George’s Hall in Blackburn for the fair. Over 500 members of the community were there, including members of the public and Job Centre customers.
Granby is particularly excited to participate as we are supporting the UKWA’s Year of Warehousing’s efforts to showcase the unique career opportunities in warehousing. Nationally, warehousing offers roles for job seekers from all backgrounds, including those in our disability communities.
Nic was able to share information on careers in warehousing, contract packing, promotional marketing and the third-party logistics industry. Declan, as a young apprentice, was able to share his firsthand insights into the industry.
Nic said afterwards “This was a great event. We were even able to make a job offer on the day! Right now, it’s a good job there was lots of tea and coffee to keep us going as answering so many questions and talking with so many interesting people meant that by the end of the day we nearly had no voices left .”
We are looking forward to hearing more about this successful day and to participating in similar events in the future.
