Declan Talbot and the MacMillan Longest Day Golf Challenge
Declan Talbot and the MacMillan Longest Day Golf Challenge. Last week, a dedicated member of our Client Services team, Declan Talbot, embarked on an extraordinary endeavour: the MacMillan Longest Day Golf Challenge.

Fore Fellas, First Tee
On Friday, June 28th, Declan, alongside three friends, took on what to the rest of us looks like a gruelling task of playing 72 holes of golf in just one day. This monumental effort was not only a test of physical and mental endurance but also a heartfelt mission to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity that holds a special place in Declan’s heart.
Early Start

The calm before the storm – 7am start
The challenge began at the crack of dawn, with Declan and his team, aptly named “The Fore Fellas,” teeing off at 7 am. Armed with his trusty Stealth 2 driver, Stealth PW-5i irons, Callaway wedges, and an Odyssey putter, Declan was well-prepared for the long day ahead.
Topped Shots and Double Bogeys
His bag was also stocked with an abundance of golf balls, a Granby truck stress toy for those inevitable topped shots and double bogeys, and an unwavering determination to see the challenge through to the end.

Macmillan Cancer Support
For Declan, this challenge was deeply personal. His grandmother’s battle with cancer has left an indelible mark on him and his family, making the cause of Macmillan Cancer Support incredibly meaningful. Macmillan Cancer Support is renowned for its comprehensive care and assistance to those affected by cancer.
They provide medical, emotional, practical, and financial support, ensuring that no one has to face cancer alone. Their work extends beyond patients to include families and communities, offering a lifeline during some of the most challenging times.
25 Miles

Declan putting for glory
As the day progressed, Declan and his team walked approximately 25 miles, navigating the course with determination and camaraderie. The weather was a mix of sun, rain, and wind, providing both challenges and relief throughout the day. Despite the physical toll, the team remained in high spirits, driven by the cause they were supporting and the encouragement from their supporters.
72 Holes!
By the time they completed the 72nd hole, around 12 hours later, exhaustion was evident, but so was a sense of accomplishment.
In the Clubhouse, Declan reflected on the experience.
“It wasn’t too bad in the first half, we thought it was going to be a breeze but we were incredibly wrong. The weather couldn’t have been better for it and we got really lucky as there was sun, bit of rain to cool us down and a bit windy. All in all, a really good day out and I am planning on doing it again next year, maybe even play 100.”

£1,500 Raised – What an achievement!
The “Fore Fellas” not only completed the challenge but also surpassed their fundraising target. Initially aiming to raise £1,200, they managed to collect over £1,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support. This is in big part thanks to the incredible generosity and support from friends, family, and colleagues. This achievement is a testament to the power of community and the impact that collective efforts can have on important causes.
Declan’s journey through the MacMillan Longest Day Golf Challenge is a great example of determination. It is also a tale of resilience, and the spirit of giving. His story shows that with passion and perseverance, we can all make significant difference in the lives of others. Well done!
