Warehouses will increasingly rely on automation technologies such as robotics, AI, as well as machine learning to improve efficiency and reduce costs. This area is one our Head of IT is particularly interested in.
Growth of smart warehouses:
Warehouses will become more intelligent and interconnected. They will leverage technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) to optimise operations and enable real-time tracking and monitoring. We think the low hanging fruit will be in optimising routes to customers and improving customer journeys in support and service.
Expansion of e-commerce fulfilment centres:
With the continued growth of online shopping, there will be a surge in the number of e-commerce fulfilment centres to meet the increasing demand for fast and efficient order fulfilment.
Integration of drones and autonomous vehicles:
It sounds like science fiction to many, but it’s real and it’s started. Drones and autonomous vehicles will play a more significant role in the warehousing industry. They will enable faster and more efficient delivery of goods within warehouses and to customers. Whether this becomes commonplace in 2024 is doubtful but moves will be made!
Emphasis on sustainability:
Warehouses will prioritise sustainability by implementing eco-friendly practices such as energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction, and the use of renewable energy sources. This is one of the key pillars of the UKWA’sYear of Warehousing.
Integration of virtual and augmented reality:
Virtual and augmented reality technologies will be used to enhance training programs, improve order picking accuracy, and optimise warehouse layout and design.
Growth of social commerce:
Social media platforms will continue to evolve into shopping destinations, with features like in-app checkout and shoppable posts. Marketers and customer service teams will need to leverage these opportunities to drive sales and engage with consumers directly on social media.
Expansion of omnichannel marketing:
With consumers using multiple devices and platforms, marketers will need to adopt an omnichannel approach to reach and engage their target audience. This involves creating consistent and seamless experiences across various touchpoints, such as websites, social media, email, and offline channels. This is not simply a sales issue, this applies equally to after sales service and loyalty programs.
Hybrid working:
Post-Covid has proved a boon for many businesses and employees. But it has also presented challenges in terms of communication and collaboration. Overall, the return to office in a hybrid model has reshaped the way work is done in the UK workplace. The question is, is that model now fixed? We think 2024 will see, if not a full return to 5 days in the workplace, more employees choosing to spend time in the workplace. Or more physical collaborative spaces than in recent years.
Emphasis on sustainability and ethical marketing:
No surprises here and possibly the easiest prediction to make. Consumers are becoming more conscious of the environmental and social impact of their purchasing decisions. In response, brands who recognised the need to prioritise sustainability and ethical practices in their marketing efforts but have not yet delivered, will need to act.
“Of course, as we’ve all seen in recent years, the world is a complex one and there will undoubtedly be something that comes in from left field for us all to address. Predicting the future is just so difficult. But we can be sure that in 2024 our focus will be on delivering innovative, comprehensive, and transformative fulfilment solutions for all of our clients, in any way that we can.” Victoria Pittman
