Warehouse Management Strategies: Optimising Your 3PL Operations

In today’s fast-paced logistics landscape, 3PL providers must go beyond basic fulfilment to deliver value through innovation, agility and sustainability. In this blog, we’re going to provide deeper insights into warehouse management strategies and how we optimise our 3PL operations.
The logistics industry has experienced many changes over the last few years, and it’s vital that 3PL providers do what they can to remain ahead of trends. While there’s no shortage of logistics providers, the real value lies in solving client challenges, something many overlook. At Granby, that’s exactly where we focus; delivering solutions that drive client success and elevate the customer experience.
With higher customer expectations and increased regulatory compliance requirements, logistics companies must rethink warehouse management strategies to ensure success, not just functionality.
At Granby, we’ve built our warehouse management strategy around innovation, agility and sustainability, keeping us at the forefront of the industry. This is possible due to leveraging our bespoke, in-house built, advanced systems, intelligent scheduling and prioritising sustainable practices, which all enable our clients to thrive.
Let’s take a closer look at our warehouse management strategies and how they support our clients.
Advanced Warehouse Management System (WMS): SCOPe in action
Traditional WMS systems were built for stability, but now, clients demand advanced integration and full supply chain transparency. Our bespoke, in-house-built, advanced warehouse management system, SCOPe, has evolved to meet these changing needs.
SCOPe is more than just a system; it is the digital backbone of our fulfilment operations.
Developed in-house, SCOPe is purpose-built to support the evolving needs of our business and our clients. It offers seamless integration not only with our clients’ internal systems but also with leading eCommerce platforms and online marketplaces, enabling real-time synchronisation of orders, inventory, and customer data.
In addition, SCOPe is fully integrated with our carrier network, allowing for automated label generation, live tracking updates, and performance monitoring across multiple delivery partners. This end-to-end connectivity ensures a streamlined, data-driven fulfilment experience that enhances operational efficiency and supports scalable growth.
Real-time visibility
At Granby, real-time data isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Operating without it means relying on outdated insights, which can lead to inefficiencies such as overstocking, delayed fulfilment, and ultimately, dissatisfied customers. That’s why we’ve embedded real-time visibility into every stage of our fulfilment process.
From the moment stock is expected, we assign SKU numbers in advance of arrival. This proactive approach streamlines the booking-in process and enables a complete audit trail, capturing stock levels, valuation, and movement history with precision.
Our warehouse operations are further enhanced by a dynamic ‘Utilisation 3D Map’, which allows us to pre-plan storage locations, keep client stock consolidated, and simplify both stock checks and picking accuracy.
All of this is powered by SCOPe, providing end-to-end traceability, from goods-in to despatch.
Granby’s contract packing operations are underpinned by our in-house developed module within SCOPe, purpose-built to meet the specific demands of complex collation workflows.
This specialist module enables precise and efficient stock management by accounting for all variables involved in contract packing. It supports detailed tracking of component usage, batch control, and assembly logic, ensuring full traceability and compliance throughout the process.
By integrating seamlessly with our warehouse operations, SCOPe allows us to manage stock allocation dynamically, monitor utilisation in real time, and maintain a clear audit trail from receipt through to final dispatch. This level of control ensures that every pack is assembled accurately, efficiently, and in line with client specifications.
Features include:
- Stock cycles
- Best before end dates
- First in, first out (FIFO)
- Work in progress (WIP)
- Obsolete stock
- Stock warranties
- Recycling options
- Minimum stock levels
- Stock reservations
- Quarantine
- Ring fencing
Granby performs rotational stock checks as well as scheduled client stock counts. We can complete these in multiple ways, including ‘Stop & Count checks’, where nothing comes in or out, or ‘Rolling Stock counts’, where we can continue to process orders while checking stock. This innovative system improves stock accuracy and reduces the risk of disrupting operations.

Customisable dashboards
Traditional systems often lacked the ability to customise dashboards, which can portray companies as not being transparent or lacking client-centricity. We recognise the value of being transparent with clients, which is why our WMS has the ability for clients to customise their own dashboards. This enables them to track KPIs and other operational insights, such as goods in and out, outstanding picks, stored stock, replenishment stock and warehouse capacity. This data can then be reported back to the rest of the supply chain.
At Granby, our main KPI is fulfilment on time and in full, which is critical in the retail sector. Our end-to-end support means that we can ensure client schedules and timescales are adhered to.
We also record in-depth picking statistics, allowing us to place items more strategically in our warehouses based on picking frequency. As a result, we can increase picking speed and reduce travel time. Our WMS also provides replenishment alerts for backfilling pick faces and provides demand forecasting statistics, such as aged or slow-moving stock. This helps to avoid overstocking or running out of stock.
SCOPe also supports perpetual inventory management, enabling clients to monitor stock levels, order trends and fulfilment performance at any time. All employees are cross-trained to handle multiple warehouse functions, and KPIs are set to track productivity, ensuring that we get the best outcomes for our clients.
In addition to being awarded the ISO 9001 certification, which ensures quality management, we also apply Lean and Six Sigma principles to ensure accuracy and optimisation of our processes.
Multi-channel order intake
Granby’s SCOPe system allows for multi-channel order intake via APIs, SFTP, or OrderSure. OrderSure is our complete fulfilment system that enables orders to be received, picked/packed and shipped out with full transactional history. It can be used for both batch and single order picking.
Granby offers a flexible and responsive delivery model that supports both B2B and B2C fulfilment requirements.
For our wholesale clients, we provide direct shipping from our warehouses to depots or retail locations, with same-day or next-day despatch options available. This ensures stock reaches its destination quickly and efficiently, supporting time-sensitive retail and promotional activity.
In parallel, we also manage direct-to-consumer (D2C) fulfilment, enabling clients to reach end customers with speed and accuracy. Our intelligent order routing system evaluates key factors such as stock availability, geographic proximity, and carrier performance to determine the most efficient despatch route. Granby partners with a trusted network of downstream shipping providers to ensure timely and secure delivery across all channels.
Whether shipping to a store or a doorstep, we maintain full visibility and control through SCOPe, our in-house fulfilment platform, ensuring a seamless experience for both clients and their customers.
As a logistics provider, there are many benefits to this, including increased reach, improved inventory management and better performance for fulfilment and delivery.

Data security & operational precision
At Granby, data security is not just a compliance checkbox, it’s a foundational principle that underpins every system and process we design. We understand that failing to protect data can erode client trust, introduce legal risks, and expose organisations to cyber threats. That’s why we’ve built our infrastructure to exceed evolving data protection standards.
All of our systems, including SCOPe, are developed in-house with security at their core. We are certified under the UK Government’s Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus schemes, ISO 27001 accredited, and registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). These credentials validate our commitment to safeguarding data through robust technical controls and internationally recognised information security practices. As a registered data processor, we also enforce strict data retention policies and operate in full compliance with GDPR.
This same level of attention extends to our operational processes. Our diary management and ASN (Advanced Shipping Notice) system ensures that every delivery is scheduled, verified, and processed with precision, minimising disruption and promoting a seamless experience for our clients.
With Granby, clients can be confident that their data is handled with integrity, confidentiality, and accountability, while their operations run with the same level of care and control.
Diary scheduling
Effective scheduling and operational planning are fundamental to a well-run logistics operation. Historically, businesses have faced significant challenges due to poor coordination and disorganised scheduling, issues that not only disrupt warehouse efficiency but also undermine the professionalism and reliability of the service offered. At Granby, we prioritise structured planning and proactive scheduling to ensure seamless operations, minimise delays, and uphold the high standards our clients expect.
Our warehouse team utilises ASN data to schedule deliveries, enabling us to avoid congestion and ensure a smooth flow of goods in. Advanced scheduling means we can establish where each delivery will be stored and identify any storage requirements.
Our resource allocation system is dynamically adjusted based on expected volumes. This is crucial for ensuring the right personnel and equipment are in place upon delivery.
Our team takes a strategic approach by utilising Just-In-Time fulfilment. This means that we align inventory arrivals with production or order timelines. By using this approach, we can minimise storage costs and ensure precision in our warehouses.
Advanced shipping notices
Before stock is sent to our secure warehouses, we require an ASN (Advanced shipping notice). This typically includes shipment contents, quantities and an estimated delivery time. Having access to this data in advance means that our warehouse teams can prepare space and resources accordingly, resulting in a more streamlined and efficient service. It can also help to reduce congestion in the warehouse, improve delivery punctuality and minimise wait times.

Quality checks
In today’s consumer-driven market, rigorous quality assurance is more critical than ever. As customer expectations continue to rise, inadequate quality control can result in increased returns, reputational damage, and a decline in client confidence.
At Granby, we recognise that quality is not optional; it’s integral to every stage of our fulfilment process. Our quality checks are embedded into our operational workflows and supported by SCOPe, our in-house platform, to ensure consistency, accuracy, and accountability. We ensure that verification and traceability are built into our processes.
As part of our core process, we generate detailed Goods Received Notes (GRNs) for every delivery, providing full traceability from receipt through to storage. In addition, we conduct 10% quality checks as standard, verifying stock against delivery documentation and client specifications.
Where required, we also offer 100% quality inspections for clients with enhanced compliance or product assurance needs. These checks are fully integrated into our SCOPe platform, ensuring every action is recorded, auditable, and aligned with our commitment to operational excellence.
When goods arrive at our warehouses, the WMS creates a SKU, which contains information such as value, weight, dimensions, minimum stock levels, re-order levels and more.
Having these systems in place enables us to improve operational efficiency and increase client confidence due to having transparent, auditable processes.
Carrier integration
SCOPe enables seamless integration between eCommerce platforms and our trusted carrier network, forming the foundation of a responsive and intelligent logistics operation.
Rather than simply identifying available carriers, our system actively optimises the delivery method and supplier based on each order’s specific requirements, factoring in service-level expectations, destination, weight, and routing logic.
Granby utilises different areas of the warehouse for receiving stock, storing stock, picking and shipping. We have also optimised these areas by utilising racking systems to maximise storage and ensuring optimal aisle width for ease.

Eco-driven fulfilment: Where responsibility meets results
Sustainability is increasingly important to clients and consumers, and it is no longer an option for companies. Clients in all industries are searching for partners that are proactive and align with their ESG goals. Showcasing your sustainability efforts can increase your competitive advantage and enable you to reach more clients.
Granby’s sustainability strategy is embedded in every aspect of our warehouse operations. As a dedicated 3PL provider, we are always searching for more ways to enhance sustainability in our warehouses. Here are just some of the initiatives we have implemented.
Eco-conscious packaging
As a fulfilment company, we recognise our responsibility to lead by example in promoting environmentally conscious fulfilment practices. Sustainable packaging is a key part of this commitment.
We have taken proactive steps to reduce our environmental impact by replacing traditional materials such as bubble wrap and jiffy bags with FSC-certified cardboard and recycled shredded paper, ensuring both product protection and eco-friendly outcomes. In addition, we consolidate shipments wherever possible to minimise packaging waste and reduce transport-related emissions. This approach not only supports our sustainability goals but also enhances operational efficiency.
Carbon reduction
Warehousing and fulfilment companies should take steps to reduce their carbon output. Since 2021, Granby has been on a mission to reduce its carbon footprint. In 2024, our carbon emissions were 31% lower than in 2021. Part of this strategy has been possible due to encouraging remote work and virtual meetings. We have also invested in temporary sustainable warehouse structures to reduce off-site transport.
Supplier alignment
At Granby, we are committed to identifying and implementing the most sustainable logistics solutions across our operations. This commitment is strengthened when we collaborate with like-minded logistics partners who share our environmental values. A prime example is Evri, whose use of electric vehicles and optimised delivery routing contributes meaningfully to reducing carbon emissions and improving delivery efficiency.
By aligning with partners that prioritise sustainability, we’re able to extend our environmental responsibility beyond our own facilities, supporting greener supply chains and helping our clients meet their own sustainability goals.

Net Zero commitment
Granby is on a mission to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, and we are well on the way to achieving this. To maintain our progress, we have published a carbon reduction plan and developed an internal net-zero working group. This group helps us identify, imagine and realise our environmental responsibilities and goals.
We are proud to have achieved and held for over 13 years the ISO 14001 certification, an internationally recognised standard that sets out the criteria for an effective environmental management system. This accreditation reflects our structured approach to minimising environmental impact across our operations.
In addition, our commitment to sustainability has been recognised with a Silver EcoVadis Medal, placing us among the top-performing companies globally for environmental, ethical, and social responsibility.
We recognise the value of these sustainable initiatives. Not only do they allow us to reduce our environmental impact, but they also promote cost savings and align with our clients’ environmental and sustainability goals.
Security & compliance: Built-in assurance
Security and compliance are a key aspect that signals trust to clients. Failure to implement high-quality security and compliance measures will lead to contract losses and a poor reputation. 3PL providers must ensure the security and protection of all goods to promote long-term success.
Security and compliance are extremely important to us at Granby. Our systems have been designed to meet the highest standards of security and compliance. Here are just some of the ways that we provide our clients with peace of mind.
Physical security measures
Every client we partner with has different security requirements. Before your goods are delivered to our warehouse, we take the time to understand your specific requirements. Our secure warehouse is equipped with caged areas and high-security rooms to protect sensitive or high-value stock. These areas have higher security measures, including high-tech intruder alarms.
With the capacity for over 7,000 pallets, robust security is fundamental to our warehouse operations at Granby. We implement comprehensive security protocols to safeguard client stock, including controlled access, monitored alarm systems, and 24/7 surveillance. As part of our commitment to site-wide safety, we are also an active member of the EDZ BID scheme, which links surrounding CCTV infrastructure directly to local police networks, providing an additional layer of real-time security and rapid response capability.
Regulatory compliance
Granby adheres to all regulatory compliance requirements, ensuring that your stock is protected and stored in optimal conditions. We adhere to the following regulations.
- COSHH
- ISO 27001: Information Security Management Systems (ISMS)
- ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
- ISO 22301: Business Continuity Management Systems (BCMS)
- ISO 13485: Medical Devices
- ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety management systems (OH&S)
- BRC Storage & Distribution to store and handle ambient food stock
- ISO 9001: Quality Management Systems (QMS)
- Cyber Essentials
- Cyber Essentials Plus
- ICO Certification
- Organic Soil Accreditation
Being awarded these certifications enables us to safely handle all goods, including hazardous materials, and ensure business continuity.

Waste management
Granby also supports businesses with reverse logistics solutions. We inspect returned items and determine the most appropriate outcome, which may include repackaging, recycling, donating to charity or safely disposing of the item. Granby has a zero to landfill policy in place, underscoring our commitment to protecting the environment.
We ensure that all hazardous and general waste is handled according to Environmental Agency guidelines, with full traceability and annual audits. We pride ourselves on ensuring transparency with clients.
Having these security and compliance measures in place provides peace of mind to clients across all sectors, including FMCGs, healthcare and public services.
The future of warehousing at Granby
The warehousing sector, currently valued at £35 billion, is projected to grow by 8% over the next five years, driven by rising consumer demand, eCommerce expansion, and evolving supply chain expectations. To remain competitive within the distribution and warehousing sector, third-party logistics (3PL) providers must continuously adapt and innovate. At Granby, we embrace this challenge by evolving our services, technologies, and infrastructure to support the full supply chain, from inbound logistics to final-mile delivery.
By staying ahead of industry trends and investing in scalable, client-focused solutions, we are well-positioned to deliver long-term value and operational excellence in a rapidly growing market.
